Measuring What Matters

600,000+ students fail exams every year —
not from lack of intelligence, but from language.

Our Impact

We believe in accountability — to the children we serve, the communities we work in, and the partners who believe in our mission. Here is the full picture.

80%

of Sub-Saharan African children are taught in a language they barely understand

Age 8

The critical window — children who build oral English before age 8 have dramatically better outcomes

The Problem

The Language Wall

A crisis hiding in plain sight across anglophone Africa

The Home

Children grow up in households where Swahili, Yoruba, Twi, Kinyarwanda, Hausa — rich, expressive languages — are spoken. The children are intelligent. The families care deeply about education.

Age 11 — Secondary School

Every subject — mathematics, science, history, geography — is taught exclusively in English. A language no one prepared them for. A language they may have heard occasionally, but never learned to understand at academic speed.

Hundreds of thousands of bright, capable children fail their secondary school exams — not because they lack intelligence, but because they could not understand the language their teachers were speaking.

The Solution — Before Age 8

Children who build strong oral English foundations before age 8 — the critical window — make the transition to English-medium instruction with dramatically better outcomes. That is exactly where GWA intervenes.
